Experimental Assessment of Crystal Collimation at the Large Hadron Collider / Rossi, Roberto
The crystal collimation of hadron beams relies on the usage of highly pure bent crystals to deflect halo particles coherently and steer them onto optimised beam absorber blocks [...]

Analytical method for the prediction of quench initiation and development in accelerator magnets / Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Bottura, Luca (CERN) ; Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Willering, Gerard (CERN)
The optimal design of the next generation of accelerator magnets calls for a high current density in the superconducting coil, which makes the magnet protection a challenge. Quenches in the high-field magnets for the High Luminosity LHC Upgrade typically develop within tens of ms, and the reaction time needs to be comparable, requiring active firing of heaters or other heat deposition techniques to increase the quench propagation velocity in the magnet. [...]

Measurement and calculation of thermal neutrons induced by the 24 GeV$/c$ proton bombardment of a thick copper target / Oyama, T (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Hagiwara, M (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Sanami, T (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Yashima, H (Kyoto U. The CERN High-Energy AcceleRator Mixed field (CHARM) facility provides a secondary particle field, produced by irradiating a thick target with 24 GeV$/c$ protons supplied by the proton synchrotron. In order to investigate the thermalization process of secondary neutrons in the CHARM facility, we measured the thermal neutrons using the gold foil activation method. [...]

Luminosity reduction caused by phase modulations at the HL-LHC crab cavities / Yamakawa, E (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Apsimon, R (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Baudrenghien, P (CERN) ; Calaga, R (CERN) ; Dexter, A C (Lancaster U. (main) ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
The design of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires two pairs of crab cavities to be installed either side of Interaction Points (IPs) 1 (ATLAS) and 5 (CMS) to compensate for the geometric reduction in luminosity due to the beam crossing angle at the IP. The HL-LHC beam current is a factor of two larger than the LHC design value. [...]

Vlasov description of the effects of nonlinear chromaticity on transverse coherent beam instabilities / Schenk, M (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, X (CERN) ; Li, K (CERN) ; Maillard, A (Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris)
This paper extends the existing Vlasov theory for transverse coherent beam instabilities to account for nonlinear chromaticity. It confirms the hypothesis that nonlinear chromaticity has two effects on the beam dynamics: (i) it changes the effective impedance which results in a modification of the coherent frequencies of the head-tail modes, and (ii) it can introduce betatron detuning with longitudinal action and provide Landau damping of transverse modes. This paper discusses measurements on the stabilization of single bunches with second order chromaticity ($Q′′$) in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. $Q′′$ introduces an incoherent betatron tune spread which can produce Landau damping of transverse instabilities. [...]

A low energy ion beamline for TwinEBIS / Pahl, H (CERN ; Heidelberg U.) ; Bencini, V (CERN ; INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) ; Breitenfeldt, M (CERN ; ADAM, Geneva) ; Granadeiro Costa, A R (CERN ; IST, Lisbon (main)) ; Pikin, A (CERN ; Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Pitters, J (CERN) ; Wenander, F (CERN)
A low energy beamline has been designed for the TwinEBIS setup. The beamline will be used to transport ions extracted from the electron beam ion source into an accelerating radio frequency quadrupole or into secondary devices, like a time of flight-mass spectrometer, attached to the beamline via a fast three way 20° ion switchyard. Particle-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) enables various novel high-gradient techniques for powering future compact light-source and high-energy physics applications. Here, a driving particle bunch excites a wakefield response in a plasma medium, which may rapidly accelerate a trailing witness beam. [...]
