The DAQ system of the 12,000 Channel CMS High Granularity Calorimeter Prototype
/ CMS HGCAL Collaboration
The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC will be upgraded to accommodate the 5-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity expected at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Concomitant with this increase will be an increase in the number of interactions in each bunch crossing and a significant increase in the total ionising dose and fluence. [...]

Metallurgical assessment of large size tensioning components for the precompression structure of the ITER central solenoid
/ Sgobba, Stefano (CERN) ; Lourenço, Sandra Sophie (CERN) ; Santillana, Ignacio Aviles (CERN) ; Libeyre, Paul (BIAM, St Paul lez Durance) ; Reagan, Travis (Oak Ridge, U.S. ITER) ; Wooten, Cain (Oak Ridge, U.S. ITER)
• An adapted fabrication and processing route including vacuum induction melting (VIM) and electroslag remelting (ESR) or vacuum arc remelting (VAR), combined with hot transformation steps involving where applicable redundant multidirectional forging, was successfully applied to the production of inconel 718 large size tensioning components for the precompression structure of the ITER central solenoid. • Material production involved a wide variety of gauges and product shapes, whose final properties are very consistent thanks to a repeatable and well mastered production process. Characterization of a polyphenyl ether oil irradiated at high doses in a TRIGA Mark II nuclear reactor
/ Ferrari, Matteo (Brescia U. ; CERN) ; Zenoni, Aldo (U. Brescia ; INFN, Pavia) ; Lee, Yongjoong (ESS, Lund) ; Hayashi, Yoshikazu (Unlisted, JP)
Samples of a commercially available polyphenyl ether (PPE) oil are irradiated in the mixed neutron and gamma radiation field of the Pavia TRIGA Mark II reactor, at irradiation doses ranging from 0.78 MGy to 7.8 MGy. The oil is a nuclear grade product, whose radiation resistance reported in the product specification is based on cobalt-60 gamma irradiation data. [...]

PENGEOM — A general-purpose geometry package for Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport in complex material structures (New Version Announcement)
/ Almansa, Julio (Univ. Hosp. San Cecilio) ; Salvat-Pujol, Francesc (CERN) ; Díaz-Londoño, Gloria (Natl. U. of Columbia, Medellin) ; Carnicer, Artur (Barcelona U.) ; Lallena, Antonio M (Granada U.) ; Salvat, Francesc (Barcelona U.)
A new version of the code system pengeom , which provides a complete set of tools to handle different geometries in Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport, is presented. The distribution package consists of a set of Fortran subroutines and a Java graphical user interface that allows building and debugging the geometry-definition file, and producing images of the geometry in two- and three-dimensions. Quarkonium Production Measurements with the ALICE Detector at the LHC
/ Fionda, F (Bergen U.)
/ALICE Collaboration
In (ultra-)relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the strongly interactingmatter is predicted to undergo a phase transition into a plasma of deconfinedquarks and gluons (QGP) and quarkonia probe different aspects of this medium. However, the medium modification of quarkonium production includes also the contribution of cold nuclear matter effects (CNM), such as shadowing or nuclear break-up in addition to QGP effects. Proton--nucleus collisions, where no QGP is expected, are used to measure cold nuclear matter effects on quarkonium production. [...]

Electronic excitations near the surface of water ice lead to the desorption of adsorbed molecules, through a so far debated mechanism. A systematic study of photon-induced indirect desorption, revealed by the spectral dependence of the desorption (7 to 13 eV), is conducted for Ar, Kr, N$_{2}$, and CO adsorbed on H$_{2}$O or D$_{2}$O amorphous ices. Particle collisions near static spherically symmetric black holes
/ Hackmann, Eva (Bremen U., ZARM) ; Nandan, Hemwati (Gurukula Kangri U., Haridwar ; UCT-CERN Res. Ctr.) ; Sheoran, Pankaj (IFM-UMSNH, Michoacan)
It has been shown by Ba\~{n}ados, Silk and West (BSW) that the center of mass energy (E_cm) of test particles starting from rest at infinity and colliding near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is always finite. In this communication, we extent the BSW scenario and study two particles with different energies colliding near the horizon of a static spherically symmetric black hole. [...]
