Simulation of density measurements in plasma wakefields using photo acceleration / Kasim, Muhammad Firmansyah (John Adams Institute, Oxford) ; Ratan, Naren (Clarendon Lab, Oxford University) ; Ceurvorst, Luke (Clarendon Lab, Oxford University) ; Sadler, James (Clarendon Lab, Oxford University) ; Burrows, Philip N (John Adams Institute, Oxford) ; Trines, Raoul (STFC Rutherford Appleton Lab, Didcot) ; Holloway, James (University College London) ; Wing, Matthew (University College London) ; Bingham, Robert (STFC Rutherford Appleton Lab, Didcot) ; Norreys, Peter (Oxford University and STFC Rutherford Appleton Lab, Didcot)
One obstacle in plasma accelerator development is the limitation of techniques to diagnose and measure plasma wakefield parameters. In this paper, we present a novel concept for the density measurement of a plasma wakefield using photon acceleration, supported by extensive particle in cell simulations of a laser pulse that copropagates with a wakefield. Femtosecond timing-jitter between photo-cathode laser and ultra-short electron bunches by means of hybrid compression / Pompili, Riccardo (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Anania, M.P (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Bellaveglia, M (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Biagioni, A (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Castorina, G (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati and University of Catania) ; Chiadroni, E (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Cianchi, A (University of Rome Tor Vergata) ; Croia, M (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Di Giovenale, D (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) ; Ferrario, M (Laboratory Nazionali di Frascati) et al.
The generation of ultra-short electron bunches with ultra-low timing-jitter relative to the photo-cathode (PC) laser has been experimentally proved for the first time at the SPARC_LAB test-facility (INFN-LNF, Frascati) exploiting a two-stage hybrid compression scheme. The first stage employs RF-based compression (velocity-bunching), which shortens the bunch and imprints an energy chirp on it. [...]

Laser-wakefield accelerators are compact devices capable of delivering ultra-short electron bunches with pC-level charge and MeV-GeV energy by exploiting the ultra-high electric fields arising from the interaction of intense laser pulses with plasma. We show experimentally and through numerical simulations that a high-energy electron beam is produced simultaneously with two stable lowerenergy beams that are ejected in oblique and counter-propagating directions, typically carrying off 5–10% of the initial laser energy. Injection of electrons by colliding laser pulses in a laser wakefield accelerator / Hansson, Martin (Lund University) ; Aurand, Bastian (Lund University) ; Ekerfelt, Henrik (Lund University) ; Persson, Anna (Lund University) ; Lundh, Olle (Lund University)
To improve the stability and reproducibility of laser wakefield accelerators and to allow for future applications, controlling the injection of electrons is of great importance. This allows us to control the amount of charge in the beams of accelerated electrons and final energy of the electrons. [...]

Higher Order Modes (HOM) excited by bunched electron beams in accelerating cavities carry information about the beam position and phase. This principle is used at the FLASH facility, at DESY, for beam position monitoring in 1.3 and 3.9 GHz cavities. [...]

A comparison of surface properties of metallic thin film photocathodes / Mistry, Sonal (Loughborough U.) ; Cropper, Mike (Loughborough U.) ; Valizadeh, Reza (Daresbury) ; Jones, L.B (Daresbury) ; Middleman, Keith (Daresbury) ; Hannah, Adrian (Daresbury) ; Militsyn, B.L (Daresbury) ; Noakes, Tim (Daresbury)
In this work the preparation of metal photocathodes by physical vapour deposition magnetron sputtering has been employed to deposit metallic thin films onto Cu, Mo and Si substrates. The use of metallic cathodes offers several advantages: (i) metal photocathodes present a fast response time and a relative insensitivity to the vacuum environment (ii) metallic thin films when prepared and transferred in vacuum can offer smoother and cleaner emitting surfaces.
