A practical introduction to quantum computing: from qubits to quantum machine learning and beyond / Fernandez-Combarro Alvarez, Elias (speaker) (Universidad de Oviedo (ES))
*** Webcast link at the bottom of the Indico page *** General description of the course Quantum computing is one the most promising new trends in information processing. In this course, we will introduce from scratch the basic concepts of the quantum circuit model (qubits, gates and measures) and use them to study some of the most important quantum algorithms and protocols, including those that can be implemented with a few qubits (BB84, quantum teleportation, superdense coding...) as well as those that require multi-qubit systems (Deutsch-Jozsa, Grover, Shor..) [...]

“Ethics in science communication - Principles that guide Nature’s journalism & science publishing” / Skipper, Magdalena (speaker) (Editor in Chief, Nature, University of Cambridge and University of Nottingham (GB))
Perhaps more than at any other time in recent history ethical and responsible communication of science is paramount. Research, no matter the discipline, is guided by established ethical principles [...]

Recent Vector Boson Scattering results from CMS / Gomez Ceballos Retuerto, Guillelmo (speaker) (Massachusetts Inst. of Technology (US))
Vector boson scattering is a key production process to probe the electroweak symmetry breaking of the standard model, since it involves both self-couplings of vector bosons and coupling with the Higgs boson. If the Higgs mechanism is not the sole source of electroweak symmetry breaking, the scattering amplitude deviates from the standard model prediction at high scattering energy [...]

Latest ATLAS results on H->bb decays and interpretation of combined Higgs measurements / Klein, Matthew Henry (speaker) (University of Michigan (US))
This seminar presents new Higgs boson results, produced with the full dataset collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2. Measurements are performed of Higgs boson decays to bb in association with a top-quark pair and in the vector-boson fusion production mode [...]

Airborne Transmission of COVID-19 – Measures to be taken indoors / Henriques, Andre (speaker) (CERN) ; Forkel-Wirth, Doris (speaker) (CERN)
Abstract: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many scientists and engineers have raised awareness with the scientific community on the possibility of airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in closed spaces. From the beginning, the COVID-related Health & Safety measures at CERN were not only based on the Host States’ instructions and WHO guidance, but also included the possibility of airborne transmission in closed spaces, despite the fact that at the time the risk of airborne transmission in public settings wasn’t fully recognized. Nowadays, with more data on the virus and the acknowledgement of this risk by the scientific community, advisory bodies and governmental agencies, we can use this new information to better prepare our workplaces by taking into account this particular mode of transmission.  This is especially important during the winter period [...]

Measurement of $Br(K^+ \rightarrow \pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu})$ with the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS / Brizioli, Francesco (speaker) (Universita e INFN, Perugia (IT))
The decay $K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar{\nu}$, with a very precisely predicted branching ratio of less than $10^{-10}$, is one of the best candidates to reveal indirect effects of new physics at the highest mass scales. The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is designed to measure   $Br(K^{+} \rightarrow \pi^{+} \nu \bar{\nu})$ with a decay-in-flight technique, novel for this channel [...]

Snapshots of the influenza virus transcription-replication machine in action and implications for anti-viral drug discovery / Cusack, Stephen (speaker) (European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Grenoble, France)
Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 both have single-stranded RNA as their genetic material. Although they are members of very different families of RNA viruses, they each possess an evolutionary-related RNA-dependent-RNA polymerase that transcribes and replicates the viral RNA genome [...]
