PDFflow: hardware accelerating parton density access
/ Rossi, Marco (Università degli Studi e INFN Milano (IT)) ; Carrazza, Stefano (Università degli Studi e INFN Milano (IT)) ; Cruz-Martinez, Juan (Università degli Studi e INFN Milano (IT))
We present PDFFlow, a new software for fast evaluation of parton distribution functions (PDFs) designed for platforms with hardware accelerators. PDFs are essential for the calculation of particle physics observables through Monte Carlo simulation techniques. [...]

Increasing Windows security by hardening PC configurations
/ Martin Zamora, Pablo (CERN) ; Kwiatek, Michal (CERN) ; Bippus, Vincent Nicolas (CERN) ; Cruz Elejalde, Eneko (Oviedo U.)
Over 8000 Windows PCs are actively used on the CERN site for tasks ranging from controlling the accelerator facilities to processing invoices. PCs are managed through CERN's Computer Management Framework and Group Policies, with configurations deployed based on machine sets and a lot of autonomy left to the end-users. [...]

Trident : An automated system tool for collecting and analyzing performance counters
/ Muralidharan, Servesh (CERN) ; Smith, David (CERN)
Trident, a qualitative analysis tool that can look at various low level metrics with respect to the Core, Memory and I/O to highlight performance bottlenecks during the execution of an application. Trident uses a three pronged approach in analyzing a node's utilization of hardware resources and to help a non system expert understand the stress on different parts of the system by a given job. Sharing server nodes for storage and compute
/ Smith, David (CERN) ; Di Girolamo, Alessandro (CERN) ; Glushkov, Ivan (Texas U., Arlington (main)) ; Jones, Ben (CERN) ; Kiryanov, Andrey (St. Petersburg, INP) ; Lamanna, Massimo (CERN) ; Mascetti, Luca (CERN) ; McCance, Gavin (CERN) ; Rousseau, Herve (CERN) ; Schovancova, Jaroslava (CERN) et al.
Based on the observation of low average CPU utilisation of several hundred file storage servers in the EOS storage system at CERN, the Batch on EOS Extra Resources (BEER) project developed an approach to also utilise these resources for batch processing. Initial proof of concept tests showed little interference between batch and storage services on a node. [...]

REANA: A system for reusable research data analyses
/ Šimko, Tibor (CERN) ; Heinrich, Lukas (New York U. (main)) ; Hirvonsalo, Harri (Espoo, Sci. Computing Ctr.) ; Kousidis, Dinos (CERN) ; Rodríguez, Diego (CERN)
The revalidation, reinterpretation and reuse of research data analyses requires having access to the original computing environment, the experimental datasets, the analysis software, and the computational workflow steps which were used by researchers to produce the original scientific results in the first place. REANA (Reusable Analyses) is a nascent platform enabling researchers to structure their research data analyses in view of enabling future reuse. [...]

The obsolescence of information and information systems : CERN Digital Memory project
/ Le Meur, Jean-Yves (CERN) ; Tarocco, Nicola (CERN)
In 2016 was started the CERN Digital Memory project with the main goal of preventing loss of historical content produced by the organisation. The first step of the project was targeted to address the risk of deterioration of the most vulnerable materials, mostly the multimedia assets created in analogue formats from 1954 to the late 1990’s, like still and moving images kept on magnetic carriers. Evolution of HammerCloud to commission CERN Compute resources
/ Schovancova, Jaroslava (CERN) ; Di Girolamo, Alessandro (CERN) ; Fkiaras, Aristeidis (CERN) ; Mancinelli, Valentina (CERN)
HammerCloud is a testing service and framework to commission, run continuous tests or on-demand large-scale stress tests, and benchmark computing resources and components of various distributed systems with realistic full-chain experiment workflows. HammerCloud, used by the ATLAS and CMS experiments in production, has been a useful service to commission both compute resources and various components of the complex distributed systems of the LHC experiments, as well as integral part of the monitoring suite that are essential for the computing operations of the experiments and their automation.
