Nonlinear predictive control in the LHC accelerator / Blanco, E (CERN) ; de Prada, C (Valladolid U.) ; Cristea, S (Valladolid U.) ; Casas, J (CERN)
This paper describes the application of a nonlinear model-based control strategy in a real challenging process. A predictive controller based on a nonlinear model derived from physical relationships, mainly heat and mass balances, has been developed and commissioned in the inner triplet heat exchanger unit (IT-HXTU) of the large hadron collider (LHC) particle accelerator at European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN). Self field instability in high-$J_{c} Nb_{3}Sn$ strands with high copper residual resistivity Ratio / Bordini, B (Pisa U.) ; Rossi, L (CERN)
High critical current density (Jc) Nb$_{3}$Sn conductor is the best candidate for next generation high field (> 10 T) accelerator magnets. Although very promising, state of the art high-Jc Nb$_{3}$Sn strands suffer magneto-thermal instabilities that can severely limit the strand performance. [...]

Reproducibility of the coil positioning in Nb$_3$Sn magnet models through magnetic measurements / Borgnolutti, F (CERN) ; Caspi, S (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Ferracin, P (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Kashikhin, V V (Fermilab) ; Sabbi, G (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Velev, G (Fermilab) ; Todesco, E (CERN) ; Zlobin, A V (Fermilab)
The random part of the integral field harmonics in a series of superconducting magnets has been used in the past to identify the reproducibility of the coil positioning. Using a magnetic model and a MonteCarlo approach, coil blocks are randomly moved and the amplitude that best fits the magnetic measurements is interpreted as the reproducibility of the coil position. Open midplane designs based on sector coils in superconducting dipoles / Bruer, J (Linkoping U.) ; Todesco, E (CERN)
This paper presents a study of the effects of opening up the midplane in conventional sector coil dipoles, also known as cosè-designs. The open midplane design is a candidate for the higher luminosity upgrade for the LHC, and also for the future beta beam project at CERN, which has the heat deposition mainly concentrated in the midplane of the dipoles. Electromagnetic efficiency of block design in superconducting dipoles / Rossi, L (CERN) ; Todesco, E (CERN)
Semi-analytical scaling laws have been derived for the electromagnetic design of superconducting dipoles based on sector coils approximation. Here we discuss the different features of block coils designs used in the past, focusing on the field quality issues, and on the efficiency of the electromagnetic design (i.e. [...]

For the Next European Dipole (NED) program, a Powder-In-Tube (PIT) strand was successfully developed by SMI. This high-performance Nb$_{3}$Sn strand presents a non-copper critical current density of ~ 2500 A/mm2 at 12 T applied field and 4.2 K and a filament diameter around 50 µm. [...]

Residual strain in a Nb$_3$Sn strand mounted on a barrel for critical current measurements / Thilly, L (Futuroscope Chasseneuil, Poitiers U. LMP) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Stuhr, U (Zurich, ETH ; PSI, Villigen) ; Bordini, B (Pisa U.) ; Seeber, B (Geneva U.)
The strain dependence of the critical properties of Nb$_{3}$Sn superconducting strands is a major complication for critical current (Ic) measurements. We report neutron diffraction measurements that have been carried out at room temperature and at 10 K in order to determine the strain state of a Nb$_{3}$Sn powder-in-tube (PIT) strand mounted on a critical current measurement barrel made out of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy..

The high flux of high energy x-rays that can be provided through state-of-the-art high energy synchrotron beam lines has enabled a variety of new experiments with the highly absorbing Nb$_{3}$Sn superconductors. We report different experiments with Nb$_{3}$Sn strands that have been conducted at the ID15 High Energy Scattering beam line of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). [...]

The interstrand contact resistance (Rc) in Rutherford type cables for fast cycling superconducting magnets must be sufficiently high in order to limit eddy current losses. The required value for Rc depends on the cable and magnet geometries and on the foreseen cycling rate, but is typically of the order of one mW. [...]
