QUIC Transport Protocol Performance and Security Considerations
/ Vixie, Paul (speaker)
Abstract:The Internet has long served as the Web's communications substrate, and historically that has meant TCP/IP. TCP is a clear text reliable stream protocol which predates the Web by about two decades and is usually implemented in the operating system's kernel. [...]

The Physics of Music from Pythagoras to Microtones
/ Masina, Isabella (speaker) (Universita e INFN, Ferrara (IT)) ; Lo Presti, Giuseppe (speaker) (CERN)
Abstract:What are the physical foundations of Western music? Why are there 12 notes in an octave? Why is Equal Temperament so successful? What is the role of microtones in music composition? In this lecture series we will try to answer these and many other questions, that might have come to the mind of scientists playing an instrument from amateur to semi-professional level. In the first lecture, starting from the case study of the vibrating string, we first review harmonic sounds and timbre in the context of Signal Theory. We then introduce the psychoacoustic notions of "roughness", Critical Bandwidth and Discrimination Limen. [...]

REMOTE - 3rd Series on Data Protection - Online tracking and Freedom of Scientific Research
/ Rossetti, Stefano (speaker)
Abstract: One of the main features of modern information societies is the vast amount of data exchanged via technological tools. In this lecture, we will take a close look at the types of information potentially involved, the technical tools used to seize it and what happens once it has been received by a third party. [...]

3rd Series on Data Protection - The Past, Present and Future of Online Tracking
/ Veale, Michael (speaker) (University College London's Faculty of Laws)
Abstract: Most users of the Internet today cannot remember an online experience without significant amounts of tracking. In this lecture, I will outline both where we have come from --- how even when the law has arguably kept up, enforcement has been limited and confused --- as well as where we are going [...]

3rd Series on Data Protection - It’s Platforms All the Way Down”: Understanding Data and Power in the Digital Economy
/ Veale, Michael (speaker) (University College London's Faculty of Laws)
Abstract: A feature of the modern digital economy is the “platform” business strategy. But what is this, and how does it work? In this lecture, I will explain different views on what a “platform” is, and why it is crucial to understand the way platforms function and accumulate power regardless of which aspect of the digital world is of interest [...]

How to maximise the impact of Open Source projects on technological independence, competitiveness, and innovation
/ Grzegorzewska, Paula (speaker) (OpenForum Europe)
Abstract:It is estimated that open source software contributes between €65 to €95 billion to the European Union’s GDP annually and promises significant growth opportunities for the region’s digital economy, as well as supporting the goals of technological independence and innovativeness. To achieve that, European policymakers should actively engage in a transition towards more openness in its political and investment culture, and provide support to open source initiatives and projects.Paula will discuss the study on the impact of open source on the European economy she co-authored and the need for a change in how innovation is measured, as well as policy measures needed [...]

Open Science Best Practices for Source Code Preservation
/ Zacchiroli, Stefano (speaker)
Abstract:Software has become a key part of most scientific experiments, throughout all fields of knowledge. In order to overcome the so-called reproducibility crisis in science, particular attention should be devoted to how we handle software source code in the context of scientific experiments. [...]
