Radiological Characterization with a Fluence Conversion Coefficients–Based Method: A Practical Example of the Preparatory Studies to the Pilot Beam at the CERN Large Hadron Collider / Bozzato, Davide (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN)
At high-energy accelerator facilities like the ones that are part of the accelerator complex at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Monte Carlo radiation transport codes are widely employed to face the challenges of estimating radionuclide production yields and activities with the aim of performing the radiological characterization of activated components. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to ensure adequate radiation protection during scheduled maintenance, transport, and handling of these components and to establish their proper disposal pathway once they ultimately reach the end of their useful life. Investigation on different materials after pulsed high field conditioning and low-energy H- irradiation / Serafim, C (CERN ; Helsinki U.) ; Peacock, R (CERN) ; Calatroni, S (CERN) ; Djurabekova, F (Helsinki U.) ; Perez Fontenla, A T (CERN) ; Wuensch, W (CERN) ; Sgobba, S (CERN) ; Grudiev, A (CERN) ; Lombardi, A (CERN) ; Sargsyan, E (CERN) et al.
During operation, the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) of the LINAC4 at CERN is exposed to high electric fields, which can lead to vacuum breakdown. It is also subject to beam loss, which can cause surface modification, including blistering, which can result in reduced electric field holding and an increased breakdown rate. [...]

Benchmark evaluation of a single frequency continuous wave OPO seeded pulsed dye amplifier for high-resolution laser spectroscopy / Urquiza-González, M (Unlisted, DE) ; Au, M (CERN ; Mainz U.) ; Bernerd, C (Leuven U.) ; Bissell, M (Manchester U.) ; van den Borne, B (Leuven U.) ; Chrysalidis, K (CERN) ; Cocolios, T E (Leuven U.) ; Fedosseev, V N (CERN) ; Flanagan, K T (Manchester U.) ; Garcia Ruiz, R G (MIT) et al.
The study of the atomic spectrum via resonant laser excitation provides access to underlying effects caused by the nuclear structure, which is of special interest in short-lived radioisotopes produced at Isotope Separator On-Line (ISOL) facilities. Current implementations of resonant laser ionization techniques often limit the extraction of the nuclear observables due to the low spectral resolution of the pulsed laser systems deployed. [...]

Effect of Irradiation Temperature and Atmosphere on Aging of Epoxy Resins for Superconducting Magnets / Parragh, David Mate (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Martin, Noémie (Lyon U.) ; Piccin, Roland (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Pezzullo, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Lellinger, Dirk (Unlisted, DE)
The superconducting magnets of future particle accelerators will be exposed to high irradiation doses at cryogenic temperatures. To investigate the effect of irradiation temperature and atmosphere on the aging behavior, we have characterized the changes in thermomechanical properties of six epoxy resins for potential use in superconducting magnets after irradiation up to 20 MGy in ambient air, inert gas, and liquid helium. Modeling strain-induced martensitic transformation in austenitic stainless steels subjected to cryogenic temperatures using incremental mean-field homogenization schemes / Fernández-Pisón, P (CERN) ; Vishnu, A R (Carlos III U., Madrid) ; Vadillo, G (CERN) ; Rodríguez-Martínez, J A (CERN)
Austenitic stainless steels are commonly used as structural materials in high-field superconducting magnet systems because they retain high strength, ductility, and toughness at very low temperatures, and they are paramagnetic or antiferromagnetic under the Néel temperature in their fully austenitic state. However, they are susceptible to strain-induced martensitic transformation, especially at cryogenic temperatures, which modifies the material properties, induces volume changes and additional strain hardening, and leads to ferromagnetic behavior.
