Beam transfer function and stability diagram in the Large Hadron Collider / Tambasco, C (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Pieloni, T (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Buffat, X (CERN) ; Métral, E (CERN)
Predictions of transverse instability thresholds in the LHC are based on the computation of Landau damping by calculating the stability diagram (SD). However any modification of the tune spread and/or particle distribution modifies the expected Landau damping in the beams. [...]

In modern particle accelerators, satisfying the desired beam properties (high currents, high luminosities, etc.) increasingly implies limiting the total beam coupling impedance, which depends on the machine and the parameters of the circulating beams. A number of different reduction techniques have been proposed during the years depending on the specific applications, ranging from higher order modes (HOM) damping to solutions entailing high electrical-conductivity coatings of the pipe. Synchronous phase shift measurements for evaluation of the longitudinal impedance model at the CERN SPS / Schwarz, M (CERN ; KIT, Karlsruhe) ; Farricker, A (CERN) ; Karpov, I (CERN) ; Lasheen, A (CERN)
The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) requires 2.3 × 1011 protons per bunch (ppb) at LHC injection. For the SPS, the injector to the LHC, this goal requires a doubling of the injected intensity to 2.6 × 1011 ppb. [...]

Time domain measurements of the sub-THz response of different coatings for beam pipe walls / Passarelli, A (Naples U. ; INFN, Naples) ; Andreone, A (Naples U. ; INFN, Naples) ; Vaccaro, V G (INFN, Naples) ; Masullo, M R (INFN, Naples) ; Papaphilippou, Y (CERN) ; Corsini, R (CERN)
Modern accelerators and light sources often require special treatment of the vacuum chamber surface in order to avoid undesirable effects and maximize machine performance. Coatings with Non Evaporable Getter compounds and amorphous Carbon have been extensively tested and used with very effective results since they allow to reduce the secondary electron emission from pipe walls and therefore the relevant beam instability. Space Charge Effects for Transverse Collective Instabilities in Circular Machines / Burov, Alexey (Fermilab)
A brief historical review is presented of progressing understanding of transverse coherent instabilities of charged particles beams in circular machines when both Coulomb and wake fields are important. The paper relates to a talk given at ICFA Workshop on Mitigation of Coherent Beam Instabilities in Particle Accelerators, 23-27 September 2019 in Zermatt, Switzerland..

The resistive wall impedance is one of the expected main drivers of transverse beam instabilities in the proposed Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron option (FCC-hh). We obtain the resistive wall impedance for the FCC-hh beam screen from a two-dimensional finite element solver. [...]

The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider upgrade at CERN will result in an increase in the energy stored in the circulating particle beams, making it necessary to assess the thermomechanical performance of currently used and newly developed materials for use in beam intercepting devices such as collimators and absorbers. This study describes the thermomechanical characterisation of a novel copper diamond grade selected for use in tertiary collimators of the HL-LHC. [...]

Wakefield effects and mitigation techniques for nanobeam production at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility 2 / Korysko, Pierre (Oxford U.) ; Burrows, Philip N (Oxford U.) ; Latina, Andrea (CERN) ; Faus-Golfe, Angeles (IJCLab, Orsay)
The ATF2 beam line at KEK was built to validate the operating principle of a novel final-focus scheme devised to demagnify high-energy beams in future linear lepton colliders; to date vertical beam sizes as small as 41 nm have been demonstrated. However, this could only be achieved with an electron bunch intensity ∼10% of nominal, and it has been found that wakefield effects limit the beam size for bunch charges approaching the design value of $10^{10}e^-$.
